Green Island Ice Arena has not been a welcome place for Alaskan teams this month. The Chill completed their 2nd sweep in as many weeks as they knocked off the Kenai River Brown Bears 6-3 on Friday and 2-1 Saturday. The sweep comes after the Chill defeated the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in both games the previous week.
Friday’s showdown between the Chill and Brown Bears featured an offensive explosion as the Chill jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first. Forward Joey Sofo started the party scoring his sixth goal of the season. Fellow running mate Scott Corbett was not to be outdone with 2 goals of his own, however, Steven Quagliata had 4 assists to seal the deal for the Chill. Other noteworthy point contributors include Alex Falconer who had 1 goal and 1 assist and Larry Jungwirth with 2 assists. Todd Scott got the start in net for the Chill and stopped 28 of 31 shots.
Saturday’s matchup proved to be more of a challenge for the Chill. Joey Sofo opened the contest with the first goal of the game, much like Friday night’s matchup, but the Chill were hard-pressed for goals after that. It took a goal in the 17th minute of the third period from defenseman Steven Quagliata to complete the sweep for the Chill. Joe Marcoullier was in net for the Chill and stopped 21 of 22 shots. Quagliata proved to be a pivotal contributor again on Saturday with the GWG and and assist on the first goal. Quagliata’s performance this weekend earned him a league honor as the Midwest Division Player of the week. Sofo was also honored, earning an honorable mention.
The Coulee Region Chill (10-4-1) will play host to the Minnesota Magicians (10-6-2) Friday night at Green Island in a game presented by Clearview Sign. It will be the fourth meeting between the two clubs this season, the Chill leading the season series 2-1. The Chill will hope to keep their stellar defensive play going allowing only 1.75 goals per game in their last four outings. Puck drop is slated for 7 pm Friday night.
The Chill will play their first road game in nearly a month as they travel to Austin this Saturday to take on the Bruins at Riverside Arena. Coulee Region will be looking for payback as they lost their lone matchup against the Bruins on October 22nd in La Crosse. Game time is slated for 7:05 pm.
