The Chill stayed hot this past weekend starting by shutting out the Janesville Jets on the road this past Thursday night. After winning 6 straight, only a second-period goal from Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup (Schroer, List) was enough for a victory over a Jets team that has plagued the Chill in the past. Joe Marcoullier made 40 saves en route to his first NAHL shutout.
The next night the Chill came back home to face the incoming Austin Bruins in the first of two non-divisional games. Three first-period Austin goals proved to be too much for the Chill to overcome fresh off of a defensive battle in Janesville and Coulee Region fell for the first time in seven games even after a pair of goals from Justin Kendall (Dineen, Quagliata) and Steven Quagliata (Theisen, Kendall) through only three Austin penalties over the course of the evening. Brad Arvanitis saved 36 of 40 shots on the loss as one final empty-net goal slid in for a 5-2 final score.
Not to be outdone, the Chill clawed through Saturday’s game to lead 5-3 after two periods after scores from Joey Sofo (2) (Donovan, List) (Schroer, Schmidt-Svejstrup), Jackson Decker (McGlynn, Martin), Matt Doran (Trapp, Stevens), and Alex Falconer (Trapp, List). Two final-period goals with the tying goal coming with 45 seconds remaining brought the game to overtime. Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup took advantage of a power play on the Bruin’s third 10-minute misconduct penalty of the night as both Jackson Decker and Steven Quagliata assisted with a 4-on-3 advantage. The goal was Schmidt-Svejstrup’s 10th of the season since joining the Chill in late December, finding a rhythm by netting his 5th game winning goal. Quagliata sits just one short of the 30-assist mark on the season after adding two this weekend. Marcoullier’s win in goal was his 5th in a row.
With only six games in two weekends remaining, the Chill hold a 4-point lead over the Springfield Jr. Blues for the 4th and final playoff spot in the Midwest Division. The Chill have an extra two games in hand to help widen the margin. Coulee Region will host Janesville tonight before the Jr. Blues come in for two of the final four games between the division rivals on Friday and Saturday nights. The season series sits at 5-3 in favor of the Chill. All three of this weekend’s games will start at 7:00 at Green Island Ice Arena.
